About Me:
- David L. Cowles, Jr.
- I am an artist who paints impressionistic landscapes of the Southeast. My original works are focused mainly on composition and color – using water-based paint such as acrylic, tempera and watercolor. Sizes of paintings typically range from small (12” x 12”) to large (36” x 60”). I was born and grew up in Tallahassee, Florida. As a child I explored the nearby fields and woods. My love of the outdoors inspires much of my work, gathered from backyard, local and regional travel. The North Florida area, Georgia and North Carolina are generally where most of my locations (such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, parks, coastal communities, mountains, farms, old fields and roads) are derived. Most of my paintings will contain some form of water, where I like to manipulate reflections – that I feel add a provocative energy or movement to the scene. I am also a self-employed design professional, practicing Landscape Architecture and Arborist consultation… and painting landscapes.

Buck Creek Shallows [SOLD]
Clay County, North Carolina (12/15/09)
The cold valley stream widens before it diverges for a brief period, forming a small island. Exposed rocks of all sizes, moved downstream by the last heavy rain, strain the shallows before the water drops down to a deep and scouring curve. The original is 36" wide and 24" high. Harriman Circle Park in Betton Hills contains a rounded pond surrounded by flat lawn area. Oaks and pine trees cast late afternoon shadows that stretch across the road. The original is 12" x 12". The original medium is acrylic paint on canvas board.
Kathy's Drive [SOLD]

An old asphalt drive, shaded by live oaks planted by Katherine Cowles, is a rhythmic path that provides a transitional experience to a home destination. Mission Plaza [SOLD]
Tallahassee, Florida (11/25/09)
A view across the historical gathering plaza area of Mission San Luis, now interspersed with magnolia, hickory and live oak trees, is focused on the reconstructed church. Saint Marks Hammock
Gulf Coast, Florida (11/06/09)
Adjacent to the Saint Marks Lighthouse, this nearby section of coast is a marshy beach front covered with floating grass and driftwood. This salty strand is filled with cabbage palm, scrub oak, cedar, salt bush and rushes. Only black, white and brown colors were used. The original is 30” wide x 15” high. Long winter shadows cast dappled patterns over a grassy field. The wheat colors of broomsedge and bahiagrass fill the bottomland and fence rows - in front of planted pines. This single lane gravel road, with turnouts, hugs and curves with the base of the mountains where rhododendrons grow among exposed boulders. Groundwater trickles out of the mossy earth and continuously seeps across the quiet road, adding an occasional splash as you crunch along the gravel with the windows down. Old Farm Channel [SOLD]
Leon County, Florida (10/23/09)
This narrow stretch of a stream-fed freshwater lake connects two areas of open water. The banks, illuminated by the morning sun, are lined with vines, maples, willow trees, low aquatic vegetation and floating debris. The trees in shade cast dark reflections in the water that mingle with the sunny patches of hardwood. The original is 30” wide x 24” high. The original medium is acrylic paint on stretched canvas.

Within the productive waters of the Apalachicola Bay estuary, a boating channel is bordered by a shorelines of soft rush. A small uninhabited island stretches across the horizon. The original is 30” wide x 20” high. The original medium is acrylic paint on canvas board.

Dead Lakes Sunrise
Wewahitchka, Florida (10/2/09)
The still West arm of the Dead Lakes reflects a warm sunrise sky intermingled with trees, stumps and shadows. The Dead Lakes were formed where the Apalachicola and Chipola Rivers converged on a cypress swamp. A temporary past flood of salt water killed the cypress trees leaving only their stumps. Indian Lagoon
Gulf Coast, Florida (9/25/09)
The quiet brackish waters of the bay at the Indian Pass peninsula are an estuarine patchwork of wetland, rushes, depressions, strands, and sloughs. This particular area looks across a narrow channel to a small island full of cabbage palm, cedar, pine and salt bush. The original is 10” wide x 20” high. Saint Vincent Sand Dune
Gulf Coast, Florida (9/24/09)
Saint Vincent Island, an uninhabited barrier island and wildlife refuge, contains sand dunes built and sculpted by the wind. This dune is held together with the salt-tolerant sea oat species. Port Saint Joe Bay

One of the spots of North Florida where you can get a really good coastal view of the Western sky, this sunset is framed by a stage of pines and cabbage palms. Little St. George Bay
Gulf Coast, Florida (9/09/09)
Swift currents and winds at the Eastern end of the uninhabited Little Saint George Barrier Island (next to Saint George Island) form the dunes and beach. Low energy bay-side shorelines are usually grassy and flat. A naturally occurring fire on the island had just days ago burned and was evident by the brown pine canopy and scrub. A secluded site of an old monastery (not far from Buck Creek Road) that is now a meadow with emerging tree seedlings, is set on the bottom slope of a National Forest mountain. Fields of grasses, wildflowers, berries and other herbaceous growth are intermixed with old fence-rows and an occasional remnant apple tree. The original is 14” wide x 11” high. The rolling terrain of a recreational trail at Maclay Gardens slopes to the southern bank of Lake Hall. Towering pines loom over a hardwood and magnolia understory. The original is 14” wide x 18” high. The original medium is acrylic paint on canvas board.
Buck Creek Dam [SOLD]
Clay County, North Carolina (8/25/09)
Boulders of many sizes were placed here years ago, along a flatter section of the roadside creek (that eventually contributes to Nantahala Lake) to raise the water level to a slow moving waist-height. Trees like poplar, ironwood, maple, birch and sourwood grow along the bank. The blue-green colors of hemlock trees fill the background beyond an open field. The original is 36” wide x 24” high. You can't swim in this pool... along the Junior Museum boardwalk, where aquatic plants and cypress trees provide cover for the resident alligator. Near Cairo, this property has been farmed and maintained for hunting quail and deer. The late fall blue sky is a crisp background to the mix of deciduous broadleaves, evergreen pines and low brushy fields - regularly mowed and burned. The original is 24” wide x 18” high. This is one of my favorite vacation places of the roadside creek that eventually contributes to Nantahala Lake.
